Problem
Often, when I need to request a ride through an app, I can't ensure that there will be space for a wheelchair or a guide dog. I've been in several situations where the ride was canceled because the car couldn't accommodate my needs. The worst part is the embarrassment of having to explain or even plead with the driver in the chat not to cancel. What should be simple and practical ends up being stressful and exhausting.
approach
Creating a category where users can register their special needs would allow only drivers with suitable vehicles to receive these requests. This way, the passenger would feel more secure when requesting the ride, and the driver would already be prepared to assist them. This would reduce cancellations, avoid embarrassment, and make the process much more efficient and inclusive.
Since the problem stemmed from a real situation I experienced, the motivation was even greater. During the time I needed this type of service, I started talking to the drivers who accepted my rides to interview them about the new category proposal. The response was always the same: "I would be happy to help those in need; I've been in a situation like that too."
After this research phase, I moved on to define an appropriate flow for the driver, a clear approach for the passenger, and then test the first prototype.
Throughout the entire creation process, I kept in mind that, besides myself, many other users also needed this service and had no one to help. This awareness motivated me to seek the simplest and most intuitive solution possible.
"Creating a project where I could feel firsthand what it's like to depend on a service that doesn't exist and seeing my grandmother suffer because of it made me think about how I could change her life and many like hers."
